Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club was formed on 6 October 1934 by a small, all-male group of Sherwood Colliery employees, became affiliated to the ASA in 1935 and, in 1938, admitted ladies for the very first time.

Our home pool, Sherwood Colliery swimming baths, was refurbished in January 2010 and renamed the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre in recognition of our very own double gold Olympian.

Rebecca started her swimming career at Sherwood back in 1997 before moving on to the elite County swim squad, Nova Centurion, with which the Club still has strong ties.

Coached in her early days by the current Sherwood Head Coach, Ian Negus, Rebecca went on to become Great Britain’s most decorated female swimmer with four Olympic medals, two golds and two bronzes.

Current Sherwood member, Charlotte Henshaw, joins Rebecca in the Club’s history books after winning a Paralympic silver medal in the 100m breaststroke at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and, although Charlotte now trains with Nova Centurion alongside fellow Paralympian Ollie Hynd, she still dons the black & gold colours from time to time and represents Sherwood at selected Open Meets as part of her training schedule.

Head Coach, Ian Negus, has been coaching in the East Midlands, and at Sherwood Colliery Swimming Club, for many years and works hard to instil his passion and commitment into the swimmers of the future.

Working with swimmers of all ages and abilities, from beginners to elite performers, Ian works alongside a team of dedicated, professional coaches and parents of young talent, all helping to support and guide the Club's members .

All coaches have full CRB checks and hold child protection issues and child welfare in high regard.
